This is a guide to the plant life of the African savanna, the zone that lies mainly north of the equator in more or less a parallel band across Africa, from Senegal and Guinea in the west to the foothills of the Ethiopian highlands and western Uganda and Kenya in the east. Intended for the interested amateur and the professional biologist, 55 of the most common and widespread plant families inhabiting this zone of seasonal tropical vegetation are identified and discussed. To facilitate the identification of the species within these families, 700 of them are described and illustrated. An illustrated glossary is provided for the explanation of technical terms used in the text, and a selected bibliography is provided for those interested in further study.
