This poetry moves us by its simple strength and honesty, its clear-eyed vision of the world it describes. Daryl Jones could be speaking of his own poems when he says of beach agates: "no two alike; each one / particular and isolate, a picture of something / we imagine or remember—a bird in glass, a face, / a landscape from childhood—something / the mind turns over and over / then flings up, wet and shining." —Linda PastanDaryl Jones grew up in Rockville, Maryland, and holds degrees in English from Michigan State University. He has taught creative writing and American literature at Michigan State University and Texas Tech University where he served as chair of the Department of English. Since 1986, he has been Professor of English and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Boise State University in Idaho. He is the author of The Dime Novel Western, a critical study of the popular Western novel, and numerous essays and reviews. His poems have appeared in Black Warrior Review, Carolina Quarterly, New Orleans Review, Sewanee Review, TriQuarterly, and many other journals and anthologies. In 1985, he received a Creative Writing Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. An earlier version of Someone Going Home Late was a finalist in the 1987 National Poetry Series Open Competition.
