English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs is a collection of 43 traditional stories that recount the adventures of giants, witches, princes, princesses, and animals. These are real fairy tales and not watered down tales with a happy ending. Along with the classics like Jack the Giant Killer and Tom Thumb there are lesser-known tales full of real suspense, action, ghosts, magic, really wicked stepmothers, love lost, imps, and fairies. And no guns. English Fairy Tales provides the genuine effect, real anxiety and real relief at the point of resolution. You can never be sure that there will be a wedding at the end of any story. This book also has beautiful word-play and rhythm. Joseph Jacobs was a folklorist, literary critic and historian. Jacobs wrote for journals and books on the subject of folklore and produced a popular series of fairy tales.

Balthasar Gracián y Morales (1601-1658) assumed his final vows of the Jesuits in 1635, having been raised by his uncle, a priest, and studying theology in Zaragoza, Spain. Gracián became quite famous as a preacher, and wrote a number of literary works concerning politics, practical advice for life, and philosophy. Today he is known as the most representative writer of the Spanish baroque style called Conceptismo (Conceptism), a literary style characterized by succinct and subtle expressions of witty, significant ideas. "The Art of Worldly Wisdom" is a collection of about three hundred maxims and advice with commentary. His poetic use of rhetoric made Gracián appealing to readers, but because he published much of his work without the permission of his superiors, he was chastised by the church, and eventually sanctioned and exiled. This book was Gracián's most internationally popular work, and was translated into German by Schopenhauer, and into English by Joseph Jacobs in 1892.

Though this book is your very, very own, you will not mind if other little girls and boys also get copies of it from their mummeys and papas and ganmas and ganpas, for when you meet some of them you will, all of you, have a number of common friends like " The Cinder-Maid," or " The Earl of Cattenborough," or "The Master-Maid," and you can talk to one another about them so that you are old friends at once. Oh, won't that be nice? And when one of these days you go over the Great Sea, in whatever land you go, you will find girls and boys, as well as grown-ups, who will know all of these tales, even if they have different names. Won't that be nice too ? And when you tell your new friends here or abroad of these stories that you and they will know so well, do not forget to tell them that you have a book, all of your very own, which was made up specially for you of these old, old stories by your old, old GANPA.
