The new constitution gives no scope for retrenchment and therefore no scope for measures of social reform except by fresh taxation, the heavy burden of which on the poor will outweigh all the advantages of any reforms. It maintains all the existing foreign services, and the cost of the administrative machinery high as it already is, is further increased.

The first edition of Gandhiji's Autobiography was published in two volumes, Vol. I in 1927 and Vol. II in 1929. The original in Gujarati which was priced at Re. 1/- has run through five editions, nearly 50,000 copies having been sold. The price of the English translation (only issued in library edition) was prohibitive for the Indian reader, and a cheap edition has long been needed. It is now being issued in one volume. The translation, as it appeared serially in Young India, had, it may be noted, the benefit of Gandhiji's revision. It has now undergone careful revision, and from the point of view of language, it has had the benefit of careful revision by a revered friend, who, among many other things, has the reputation of being an eminent English scholar. Before undertaking the task, he made it a condition that his name should on no account be given out. I accept the condition. It is needless to say it heightens my sense of gratitude to him. Chapters XXIX-XLIII of Part V were translated by my friend and colleague Pyarelal during my absence in Bardoli at the time of the Bardoli Agrarian Inquiry by the Broomfield Committee in 1928-29. Mahadev Desai, 1940.

9781508932536 | Createspace Independent Pub, March 17, 2015, cover price $6.50 | About this edition: El primer principio de la acción no violenta consiste en no cooperar con cualquier cosa que sea humillante.

The simple spinning wheel became a powerful weapon for Indian independence under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi. Born into relative privilege, Gandhi became known for living for example as a devout Hindu and ascetic. A lawyer by training and experience, he became a leading figure in the movement for Indian home rule. A return to the old lifestyle he was now living, Gandhi reasoned, could play a vital role in that movement. As Dwijendranath Tagore states in the “Appreciation” in this volume: “His emphasis on simplicity of life and on the simplification of the machinery of living must be realised as a supremely essential condition of the coming of the new Era. In the civilisation of the Future, an Era of natural harmonious living will be inaugurated, and artificial, luxurious and pompous living will be entirely rooted out.” Swadeshi, self-sufficiency, was an integral part of Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement. Boycotting all British goods would both bring the population together and enable them to return to the old ways, under which British rule would cease to function. His vision upon launching the program addressed here was for all Indians to be dressed in cloth spun by Indians from simple machines. This small volume is an argument for that vision and a guide toward achieving it.
