One of France s preeminent historians of philosophy, Marcel Conche has written and translated more than thirty-five books and is recognized for his groundbreaking and authoritative work in Greek philosophy, as well as on Montaigne. In Philosophizing ad Infinitum, one of his most remarkable and daring books, Conche articulates a unique and powerful understanding of nature, inclusive of humanity, as infinite in time and space ever self-renewing, eternal, and beyond complete understanding or control. In today s world the notion of infinity is at the core of the crisis humanity faces understanding nature. For the last two hundred years economies have been running at full speed, fueled by the implicit belief that natural resources are infinite; however, it is clear that they are not and that humanity needs to radically rethink the foundations of environmental and economic systems. Conche seeks to begin this rethinking, illustrating along the way insightful and sometimes unorthodox ideas about Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Bergson, and others."

9780520085602 | Reprint edition (Univ of California Pr, December 1, 1997), cover price $31.95 | About this edition: The environmental crisis is global in scope, yet contemporary environmental ethics is centered predominantly in Western philosophy and religion.

On the eve of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Fernando J. R. da Rocha challenged environmental philosophers to suggest and develop effective ways in which universities might engender ecological literacy and environmental ethics. The result was a preconference held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, whose aim was to put the summit in philosophical perspective, influence its outcome, and chart a new course, linking environment and ethics through university education. This book is an outgrowth of the Porto Alegre conference, and the international environmental philosophers and educators represented here inaugurate a constructive dialogue that will continue well into the twenty-first century. Among the contributors to the volume are environmental philosophers Andrew Brennan, J. Baird Callicott, Fernando J. R. da Rocha, and Holmes Ralston, III, and education theorists Peter Madsen and John Lemons. In addition, the book introduces English-language readers to the work of French philosopher Catherine Larrere, Spanish philosopher Nicholas Sosa, and Brazil's radical former Secretary for the Environment and deep ecologist Jose Lutzenberger.

"In a single volume, this brings to the forefront a diversity of perspectives concerning environmental philosophy. Informed scholars reflect upon our current understanding of biology, ecology, and non-western philosophical traditions in order to rethink the platform of the conservationist's cause. Each chapter reveals important insights and contains much original thinking as contributors explore new ideological resources for managing our global environment...must reading for all concerned persons who are actively involved in defending our natural resources." -- David Edward Shaner, Furman UniversityHere, Western environmental philosophers and some of our most distinguished representatives of Asian and comparative philosophy critically consider what Asia has to offer. The first section provides an ecological world view as a basis for comparison. Subsequent sections include chapters by leading contemporary scholars in Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Buddhist thought that explore the Western perception of Asian traditions--the perception that Asian philosophy is a rich conceptual resource for contemporary environmental thinkers."It would serve as valuable reading for anyone who is interested in the environment and in exploring new and traditionally Asian approaches to this crucial subject." -- Shigenori Nagatomo, Temple University
