Summaries and Reviews
Amazon.com description: Product Description: This new book brings together, for the first time, two documents initially prepared at the instigation of European Parliament Members for the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals. When the European Parliament needed information on animal welfare issues, it turned to the Eurogroup for Animal Welfare (the Eurogroup). The Eurogroup unites the leading animal welfare organisations in the Member States of the European Union. It seeks to convene a unified animal welfare voice with which to lobby the European Institutions and to provide sound scientific evidence and detailed factual information to support arguments for legislative change in the field of animal welfare. This volume, provided by the Eurogroup in response to the request of the Parliament, is a unique reference work for all those with an active interest in issues of animal welfare. The first part presents a detailed analysis of major areas of concern for animal welfare in Europe and suggests ways to address them. It provides a guide to the main aspects of animal welfare which are, or could be, affected by European Community (EC) legislation or the work of the Council of Europe and the GATT/WTO. The second part summarizes legislation at the levels of the EC and the Council of Europe and judgments of the European Court of Justice that specifically relate to animal welfare matters, with references to major species conservation and habitat protection measures. Both parts remain up to date with periodic revisions undertaken to address further developments.
