Summaries and Reviews
Amazon.com description: Product Description: According to the results of large-scale studies, based on material from stroke data banks, more than two-thirds of all cerebral ischemic events are due to embolism rather than local thrombosis. This information has led not only to an increased interest in cerebral embolism, but also to a new direction by scientists in their study of its formation and development. Drawn from many different disciplines, including physiology, neurology, haematology and pathology, an international panel of scientists here present their latest findings on cerebral embolism. Apart from concentrating in modern aspects of the pathomechanisms of embolism, the book also examines recently evolved diagnostic methods. One of these is the use of low-frequency pulsed Doppler techniques for the detection of high-intensity transient signals (HITS) as potential indicators of cerebral microembolism. A chapter on magnetic resonance imaging and quantitative ultrasound flow volumetry provides further insights into this area of research. This book contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Cerebral Embolism, Gutersloh, Germany, January 1994.
