Summaries and Reviews
The first three contributions survey eighteenth and nineteenth century travel writing on Africa: from the travelogues of the Austrian researcher Oscar Baumann, who travelled to West and East Africa, to the reports given by Georg Forster and Adelbert von Chamisso on their trips to the Cape of Good Hope. These opening articles are followed by comparative analyses of the novels Zeit der Nordwanderung by Tajjib Salich and Vergiss Ãgypten by Barbara Frischmuth. A further essay deals with allegations of racism and anti-semitism levelled against Christian Kracht following the publication of his novel Imperium. The next few studies deal with Ilija Trojanovâs novel Der Weltensammler, with youth literature in African settings - including Herbert Kaufmannâs Der Teufel tanzt im Ju-Ju-Busch (1956), Thomas Fuchsâs Akwaaba, ein Sommer in Afrika (2006), and Katja Brandisâs Gepardensommer (2009) - as well as with André Brinkâs novel The Other Side of Silence. The work of the South African German Studies scholar Trümpelmann (1903-1982) is the subject of another article. Two contributions in the second part of this volume examine - one hundred years after its declaration - the consequences of World War I: Stephan Wackwitzâs novel Ein unsichtbares Land (2003), hitherto categorised as «Familienroman» is being subjected to a new reading, and German literature in translation during World War I receives renewed attention, with a focus on the conditions of a militarised book trade. The final article makes a novel contribution in considering Büchnerâs letters intertextually, showing their import for his work as a whole.
