Summaries and Reviews description: Product Description: Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) was an English poet and novelist. A native of Dorset in the south-west of England, he is best known for his series of “Wessex novels” set in the rural countryside where he grew up. Among them are Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d’Urburvilles. The Mayor of Casterbridge is one of the best-known of the Wessex novels. Its protagonist is a man haunted by a horrible act of cruelty commited when he was young, and his struggles with the character flaws that made him commit it. Along the way Hardy examines issues of honesty, fidelity, ambition, and, ultimately, forgiveness, set against a backdrop of a dying rural way of life.
