Pregnancy continues to be a social problem confronting adolescents and remains a greater risk among African-American youth than Whites. Adolescent rites of passage programs that focus on pregnancy prevention have been proven effective in assisting adolescents with the transition into young adulthood through mentorship, support and education with a focus on restoring traditional African values. Given opportunity and attention, adolescents can make significant positive contributions to the community.
This book examines rites of passage programs, provides an account for how such programs combat high pregnancy rates, and presents an outline of one effective rites of passage program focusing on pregnancy prevention.
