After the American Civil War he published a serialized account of his time as a Confederate soldier in the The Atlantic Monthly. Amongst his other works are A Man of Honor (1873), Captain Sam; or, The Boy Scouts of 1814 (1876), Red Eagle and the Wars with the Creek Indians (1878), A Carolina Cavalier (1901), Dorothy South (1902), The Master of Warlock (1903) and Evelyn Byrd (1904).
