The Chautauqua Institution is a cultural, religious, educational and recreational oasis situated on Chautauqua Lake in the southwest corner of New York State. A summer training ground for young dancers, musicians, actors and artists; it is also a center of learning that attracts students of all ages, from curious teens to lifelong learners. And mostly it is families, not just mothers and fathers and kids, but grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins and friends. It is also tennis and golf and sailing, theater, opera, classrooms and dance. The nine week summer season divided into weeks and each assigned a theme. A morning lecture is given by a prominent speaker in the historic amphitheater and evening performances vary from the Chautauqua symphony to the Beach Boys; from the ballet to the Tommy Dorsey Band; and Marcel Marceau to Mark Russell.
This lavishly illustrated, large-format volume is the first photographic tribute to capture the essence of Chautauqua-its purpose, its people, its activity, and its place. The Hisorical Introduction is accompanied by archive black & white photographs and the other 300 photographs are color.
