News from New Cythera was first published in 1970. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.The core of this work is a translation of a newsletter published in France in July, 1769, telling of a voyage around the world of Louis Antoine de Bougainville and particularly about his discovery of an island which he named New Cythera, the island which is now known as Tahiti. In addition to the translation Professor Hammond, a professor of romance languages at Dartmouth College, provides an introduction, commentary, and notes. There is a facsimile reproduction of the newsletter, as well as a map of Bougainville’s voyage. The newsletter, which describes the island and the natives in some detail, was a popular success, and it stimulated much interest in exploration. Because of its ephemeral nature, few copies of the newsletter have survived. One is in the James Ford Bell Collection at the University of Minnesota Library, and it is on this copy that this volume in the Bell Collection series of publications is based.
