Amazon.com description: Product Description: Excerpt from Horace
Pierre Corneille, the first great dramatist of France, was born at Rouen on June 6th 1606. His father, also named Pierre, an inspector of wax cl forels placed him under the care of the Jesuits of his own town. After a brilliant course of study, Corneille left his teachers, and began business at the bar of his native town. He was then but eighteen years old. As with many other great men, an apparently tri ing incident in uenced the whole course of his subsequent career, and suggested to him the plot of his first comedy, Melz'le which was produced on the Paris stage in 1625. The success of this first attempt, though not very great, was nevertheless sufficiently cuccu raging to induce Corneille to abandon the bar in order to devote himself entirely to literature. Melz'te, though certainly poor, and not particularly entertaining, was never theless an improvement upon.what had been placed be fore the public for many years, and the play, as we have just said, was fairly well received. It was indeed a pleas ing contrast to the coarse and rough melodrama of Hardy.
