Summary
Numbed by her unintentional role in the death of a young black girl, Effie leaves New England and drifts from city to city, until she learns her boyfriend has died, and then she returns home to find salvation in the pain she left behind.
Amazon.com description: Product Description: A tragic boating accident forces Effie Greer to flee the small, New England community of Lake Gormlaith. Her boyfriend Max, a man with a shattered past and explosive temper, has accidentally killed a young black girl who had been visiting Gormlaith for the summer. Unable to deal with her own role in the girl's death, Effie drifts from city to city until learning that Max has died from a heroin overdose. She decides to return to Lake Gormlaith to confront the events of her past and help rebuild her family's cabin, the house that she grew up in and that she and Max shared. Shortly after her arrival, little gifts begin mysteriously appearing on her doorstep and eventually Effie finds salvation in the most unlikely of people.
