Summaries and Reviews
A collection of the photographs of Hollis Frampton are accompanied by an analysis of his artistic career description: Product Description: "1943: makes primitive movie out of six-foot belt collaged with images from Sears, Roebuck Company and farm equipment catalogues.
1958: works briefly as a framer at the Renaissance Print Shop.
1960-61: lives in thirteen locales over a period of nineteen months,"

Filmmaker and theorist Hollis Frampton (1836-1984) pioneered the development of "structuralist" film. However, his photography or "other work," as he called it, is virtually unknown.

Hollis Frampton: Recollections/Recreations presents the full range of Frampton's photographic work. Included are early portraits of Carl Andre, Frank Stella, and John Chamberlain; masterful take-offs on the giants of photography, including Edward Weston, E. J. Marey, and Eadweard Muybridge; explorations into the art of xerography; and recent color photographs. Featured as well are three major collaborations with photographer Marion Faller. Frampton's photographs imbued with historical references, puzzles, and humor are important progenitors of much of the work being labeled "postmodern" today.

Bruce Jenkins is a film programmer at Media study/Buffalo, Susan Krane is a curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
