Within seven weeks of his enlistment in 1941, Private Carson wsas shipped to the Philippines - no boot camp, no training, no drill. Captured by the Japanese less than a year later, he endured the Cabanatuan prison camps, nearly died, and then was put aboard a Japanese hellship bound for Japan. Malnutrition in the prison camps caused Andrew D. Carson to become clinically blind. He now lives in Oakland, California.
