In Ecce Homo (1908) Friedrich Nietzsche calls himself "the first immoralist" and adds "that makes me the annihilator par excellence". Lester Hunt examines this and other radical claims in order to show that Nietzsche does have a coherent ethical and political philosophy. He uses Nietzsche's writings as a starting point for a critique of a wider, contemporary ethical project - one that should inform our lives as well as our thoughts.

cover image for 9780140455472
The Nicomachean Ethics is the name normally given to Aristotle's most well-known work on ethics. The work, which plays a pre-eminent role in defining Aristotelian ethics, consists of ten books, originally separate scrolls, and is understood to be based on notes from his lectures at the Lyceum, which were either edited by or dedicated to Aristotle's son, Nicomachus. The theme of the work is the Socratic question which had previously been explored in Plato's works, of how men should best live. Aristotle argues that the correct approach in studying such controversial subjects as Ethics or Politics, which involve discussing what is true about what is beautiful or just, is to start with what would be roughly agreed to by people of good up-bringing and experience in life, and to work from there to a higher understanding. Taking this approach, Aristotle begins by saying that the highest good for humans, the highest aim of all human practical thinking, is eudaimonia, a Greek word often translated as well-being or happiness. Aristotle in turn argues that happiness is properly understood as an on-going and stable dynamic, a way of being in action, specifically appropriate to the human "soul", in accordance with "excellence" or virtue. If there are several virtues the best and most complete or perfect of them will be the happiest one. An excellent human will be a person good at living life, who does it well and beautifully. Aristotle says that they would also be a serious human being, in the same way that one contrasts harpists and serious harpists. He also asserts as part of this starting point that virtue for a human must involve reason in thought and speech, as this is an aspect of human living.

9780262028165 | 1 edition (Mit Pr, November 28, 2014), cover price $38.00 | About this edition: An examination of the powerful social and psychological factors that hold the belief in moral responsibility firmly in place.

The author argues, as against some very influential contemporary philosophers, that our moral judgements are frequently true. An essential premise in his argument is that God exists, that he has pro and con attitudes towards human behaviour and that these attitudes are constitutive of moral goodness and badness. The author also addresses himself to philosophers who have recently maintained that mainstream academic moral theory is defunct. As against these philosophers, the author defends a novel version of utilitarianism, which is not subject to the standard criticisms of the standsard versions of that theory. The author also discusses the nature of the overriding importance of being moral and, in that connection, draws the conclusion that survival of earthly death is likely.

Is the way to moral truth through theory?Or do we already know what's right and wrong?Throughout modern history philosophers have tried to construct elaborate moral systems to determine what's right. Recently, however, some have revived the position that we have intuitive knowledge of right and wrong. In this book, David Kaspar introduces and explores the perspective known as 'Intuitionism'. Charting intuitionism's fall in the twentieth century and its recent resurgence, Kaspar looks at the intuitionist approach to the most important topics in ethics, from moral knowledge to intrinsically good moral action.David Kaspar defends intuitionism against criticisms from competing metaethical schools, such as moral nihilism and ethical naturalism. It also takes on normative rivals, such as utilitarianism, Kantianism, and virtue ethics. By consolidating the stronger claims of both early analytic and contemporary intuitionists, Kaspar goes on to make a robust case for a rigorously intuitionist approach to explaining morality. Intuitionism also includes chapter summaries and guides to further reading throughout to help readers explore and master this important school of contemporary ethical thought. This is an ideal resource for undergraduates and postgraduates taking courses in ethics, metaethics and moral philosophy.
