Product Description: What can or should be done to ward off or alleviate the effect of financial crises? The papers in this book examine this question, focusing on particular crises, notably those of 1836, 1873, 1920 and 1929. Based on a historical consideration of the nature and propagation of financial crises, the major theoretical issues raised by the contributors centre on whether a financial system, of a nation or of the capitalist world as a whole, is fragile or robust...read more

The papers collected in this volume are contributions to T.I.Tech./K.E.S. Conference on Nonlinear and Convex Analysis in Economic Theory, which was held at Keio University, July 2-4, 1993. The conference was organized by Tokyo Institute of Technology (T. I. Tech.) and the Keio Economic Society (K. E. S.) , and supported by Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc .. A lot of economic problems can be formulated as constrained optimiza tions and equilibrations of their solutions. Nonlinear-convex analysis has been supplying economists with indispensable mathematical machineries for these problems arising in economic theory. Conversely, mathematicians working in this discipline of analysis have been stimulated by various mathematical difficulties raised by economic the ories. Although our special emphasis was laid upon "nonlinearity" and "con vexity" in relation with economic theories, we also incorporated stochastic aspects of financial economics in our project taking account of the remark able rapid growth of this discipline during the last decade. The conference was designed to bring together those mathematicians who were seriously interested in getting new challenging stimuli from economic theories with those economists who were seeking for effective mathematical weapons for their researches. Thirty invited talks (six of them were plenary talks) given at the conf- ence were roughly classified under the following six headings : 1) Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Business Fluctuations, . 2) Fixed Point Theory, 3) Convex Analysis and Optimization, 4) Eigenvalue of Positive Operators, 5) Stochastic Analysis and Financial Market, 6) General Equilibrium Analysis.

By Stefano Zambelli (editor)

9780333524497 | Palgrave Macmillan, October 21, 1991, cover price $279.00 | About this edition: Recent developments in the mathematical, statistical and conceptual bases for the analysis of economic fluctuation are surveyed in this volume.

The stunning collapse of the thrift industry, the major stock slump of 1987, rising corporate debt, wild fluctuations of currency exchange rates, and a rash of defaults on developing country debts have revived fading memories of the Great Depression and fueled fears of an impending economic crisis. Under what conditions are financial markets vulnerable to disruption and what economic consequences ensue when these markets break down?In this accessible and thought-provoking volume, Benjamin M. Friedman investigates the origins of financial crisis in domestic capital markets, Paul Krugman examines the international origins and transmission of financial and economic crises, and Lawrence H. Summers explores the transition from financial crisis to economic collapse. In the introductory essay, Martin Feldstein reviews the major financial problems of the 1980s and discusses lessons to be learned from this experience. The book also contains provocative observations by senior academics and others who have played leading roles in business and government.
