In 1845, Henry David Thoreau built a small cottage in the woods near Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. During the two years and two months he spent there, he began to write 'Walden', a chronicle of his coexistence with nature - this book is the result.

A Plea for Captain John Brown is a classic American history essay by Henry David Thoreau. I trust that you will pardon me for being here. I do not wish to force my thoughts upon you, but I feel forced myself. Little as I know of Captain Brown, I would fain do my part to correct the tone and the statements of the newspapers, and of my countrymen generally, respecting his character and actions. It costs us nothing to be just. We can at least express our sympathy with, and admiration of, him and his companions, and that is what I now propose to do.

A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Resistance to Civil Government (also known as Civil Disobedience), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions are his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern-day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. It is remarkable how closely the history of the Apple-tree is connected with that of man. The geologist tells us that the order of the Rosaceae, which includes the Apple, also the true Grasses, and the Labiatae, or Mints, were introduced only a short time previous to the appearance of man on the globe.

Massachusetts: 1854 Three fugitive slaves had been hunted down and captured within the last four years–one saved by the courageous hands of New England guerrillas, two sent back to the dehumanizing life of slavery. It stood clear, Boston, once a safe place for fugitives to seek sanctum, was now a “hunting ground for the panting fugitive”. On July 4th, 1854, Henry David Thoreau would stand before his fellow Massachussetans and advocate them to give up the business of being a law-abiding citizen. It was time to start acting like a descent human being. With this we step back into 1850 Boston and ready ourselves to hear the unfamiliar story of what brought Thoreau to speak on this state of Slavery in Massachusetts.
