First Time in Paperback. Space Adventure from a Best-Selling Writing Team. The planet Miran had sent a spaceship to rendezvous with the enormous vessel that was approaching their star system. The vessel’s design was odd—a multitude of separate globular habitats in a framework—and most of the alien team that entered one of the habitats were slaughtered by savage creatures called “humans.” One alien had barely managed to escape to another habitat where the humans were more friendly, if rather technologically backward. But he needed to get back to his spaceship, and he would need one human’s help to do that.      They would have to travel through several more habitats, each one isolated from the other, each with its own bizarre dangers and customs. And friendliness toward strangers was not one of those customs. . .

As the slavemasters of Mesa plot against the Star Empire of Manticore and the newly liberated slave planet of Torch, Anton Zilwicki and the notorious Havenite secret agent Victor Cachat set off on a dangerous mission to uncover the truth concerning a wave of mysterious assassinations that have been launched against Manticore and Torch. Most people are sure that the Republic of Haven is behind the assassinations, but Zilwicki and Cachat suspect others of being the guilty party. Queen Berry of Torch was one of the targets of the unknown assassins. The former head of the Ballroom slave liberation organization, Jeremy X - now one of Torch's top officials, but still considered by many the most dangerous terrorist in the galaxy - calls in some past favors owed to him. In response, a security officer from Beowulf arrives in Torch to take charge of Queen Berry's security - a task made doubly difficult by the young monarch's resentment of bodyguards and the security officer's own growing attachment to her. Meanwhile, powerful forces in the Solarian League are maneuvering against each other to gain the upper hand in what they all expect to be an explosive crisis that threatens the very existence of the League itself.

The Star Kingdom's ally, Erewhon, is growing increasingly restive in the alliance because the new High Ridge regime ignores its needs. Add to that the longstanding problem of a slave labor planet controlled by hostile Mesans in Erewhon's stellar back yard, a problem which High Ridge also ignores. Finally, the recent assassination of the Solarian League's most prominent voice of public conscience indicates the growing danger of political instability in the League - which is also close to Erewhon. In desperation, Queen Elizabeth tries to defuse the situation by sending a private mission to Erewhon led by Captain Zilwicki, accompanied by one of her nieces. When they arrive on Erewhon, however, Manticore's most capable agent and one of its princesses find themselves in a mess. Not only do they encounter one of the Republic of Haven's most capable agents - Victor Cachat - but they also discover that the Solarian League's military delegation seems up to its neck in skullduggery. And, just to put the icing on the cake, the radical freed slave organization, the Audubon Ballroom, is also on the scene - led by its most notorious killer, Jeremy X.

1.  The trade paperback edition of Anvil's Interstellar Patrol (04/03) was a Locus bestseller, with a strong sell through.2.  Like Keith Laumer, Anvil has a rare ability to combine fast-moving adventure with humor, deftly skewering the bureaucratic mind, whether human or alien.3.  New York Times best-selling author David Weber calls Anvil's SF "a delightful pleasure," and adds "I'm delighted that someone is making Christopher Anvil's work available once again.  Especially the Interstellar Patrol stories...I've always loved Anvil's, ah, peculiar sense of humor."4.  Advertising in Locus, moreWar is a serious business—or is it? Christopher Anvil turns his sardonic sense of humor loose on the subject and considers what might happen if:   ·         Someone devised a computer war game so realistic and addictive that the people in charge of battle on both sides didn’t have the time or inclination to start a real war. ·         Another device gave every homeowner the power to block off his property from any incursion, even by nuclear weapons. ·         A secret organization pulls the plug on an impending war by causing the commanders on both sides to be unable even to think of any of the words they need to order their forces into action. ·         And, in a full-length novel, The Steel, the Mist and the Blazing Sun, the devastation after World War III has not put an end to war—not as long as men survive who still want to conquer and dominate; nor as long as others will fight, not just to survive, but to defend freedom.        The many faces of war, examined by a master of science fiction adventure with a wryly humorous twist.
